The Mr. Oak Harbor Scholarship Competition is a unique 6-week program for local high schoolers that provides an empowering experience through mentorship and coaching that focuses on important life skills and personal growth. It is sponsored by Miss Oak Harbor (dba Whidbey Royalty), a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization.
Contestants must identify as male, be in grade 9, 10, 11, or 12, and live in or attend a school in the Oak Harbor School District.
There are two divisions: Mister Oak Harbor (Juniors & Seniors) and Teen Mister Oak Harbor (Freshmen & Sophomores). Contestants compete only against those in their division.
Applications are accepted August-September. Registration forms and additional information can be found on the CONTESTANT tab at MissOakHarbor.com.
Mr. Oak Harbor contestants are asked to stretch themselves during the competition, with the first assignment being to market themselves by asking for a business sponsor. These sponsorships help involve the community in the program by bringing a variety of businesses into the pageant “family.” They also help pay for pageant expenses. Businesses that sponsor contestants are provided with many benefits that make the $300 sponsorship fee a very worthwhile investment.
No experience is necessary! The Mr. Oak Harbor Scholarship Competition is designed for everyone. It is limited to 10 contestants in each division.
The Mr. Oak Harbor Scholarship Competition scoring system takes into account the whole person and incorporates 13 scoring categories, making this a competition for everyone which anyone can win!
Competition scoring includes 13 categories with variable weighting:
* Attendance (11%) * Marketing (9%) * Academics (5%)
* Board of Directors Input (10%) * Speech or Talent (9%) * Service (5%)
* Personal Interview (9%) * Formal Wear (9%) * Physical Fitness (5%)
* Video Journals (9%) * Stage Presence (9%) * Extra-curricular (5%)
* Work (5%)
There are a number of ways to support your favorite contestant. Buy pageant or fundraising event tickets or fundraising items, and vote with your dollars in the People’s Choice competition.
People’s Choice is an optional competition within the Mr. Oak Harbor Scholarship Competition. As a fundraiser, this contest is completely separate from the competition point system and has no bearing on the outcome of the overall competition results. It does, however, provide an opportunity for the public to vote for their favorite contestant. The contestant with the most votes wins People’s Choice, receives a crown and stole, and takes home a college scholarship equivalent to half of all People’s Choice votes.
Each contestant receives a Mr. Oak Harbor t-shirt and swag bag loaded with goodies. But more importantly, contestants receive coaching that will help them succeed not only in the competition but also in life: interview, marketing, stage presence, and mentorship.
The Mr. Oak Harbor Scholarship Competition will deliver thousands of dollars in scholarships as well as many other awards and recognition.
The top three in each division will be named King, 1st Prince, and 2nd Prince and will receive a crown, stole, trophy, and scholarship. 3rd and 4th Runners-Up in each division will also receive scholarships.
Following pageant night, the newly crowned Mr. Oak Harbor Royalty will begin their reign as representatives of Oak Harbor and will begin serving their community in a variety of ways. They will choose a community service project to focus on during their reign and will raise funds to support that organization.
